David Cross

June 23, 2007

Went to see David Cross & Friends at the 100 club yesterday nad here is my review!

First off can I say I loved the work he did on Arrested Development, it one one of the funniest shows on TV and it is much missed (and unfairy cancelled I might add). Anyway his London show was good but not great. When Cross was on stage doing his stuff it was funny and moved along nicely but his ‘friends’ really let the show down. They were not quite as funny as David and their humor was very American and although it was occasionally funny, I didn’t find it as funny as the group of Americans sitting behind me did! I did like Kristen Schaal. However her act annoyed me when she started showing a video that she made (as did Eugene Mirman). I didn’t pay £20 quid to watch some weird video that they made, I was there to watch stand up, both their acts died when they forced the audience to watch the crap that they had made which was nowhere near as funny or surreal as the worst episode of The Simpsons you have ever seen. OK maybe its unfair to compare it to The Simpsons but my point is, I see funnier stuff on TV everyday, what I’m paying for is to see people in front of a mic. Showing a video just ruins the flow and if it dies (which both videos did) the comedians have no chance for a comeback because the video is still playing!

Anyway Cross was funny as hell! The only low point in his act was the ‘Funniest Story’ he told at the end….Sorry Dave but that story was not funniest story ever…mildly amusing maybe…It was one of those stories which is like funny if you were there at the time…unfortunately most of the audience were not!
